Apither­apy (the use of nat­ural honey as a med­i­c­i­nal treat­ment) has been used for thou­sands of years in many dif­fer­ent cul­tures, dat­ing as far back as ancient Greece.

With the advent of peni­cillin and other antibi­otic drugs in the twen­ti­eth cen­tury, the use of honey as a med­i­c­i­nal treat­ment has taken a back seat, how­ever with the light of new and exten­sive research over the last three decades into the med­i­c­i­nal prop­er­ties and ben­e­fits of active Manuka Honey, such uses are now being renewed and receiv­ing a grow­ing accep­tance by both the aca­d­e­mic and med­ical fields.

Manuka Honey is a pre­mium grade honey that is derived from the nec­tar of flow­ers that grow on the Manuka bush (Lep­toper­num sco­par­ium) which grows uncul­ti­vated through­out both the North and South Islands of New Zealand.
